Dead Wooding and Crown Thinning

The dieback and shedding of branches in a natural process within the development and ageing of trees and is not something to be worried about. However, deadwood can occur for many reasons such as disease, wind damage, animal interference or even insufficient light. If there is a risk of damage to property or people then a removal of deadwood is recommended. Deadwood does however provide essential habitat and a place of shelter for many fauna and flora.

Crown thinning is an arboricultural practice that removes a selected percentage of foliage from the branch structure to allow light penetration through canopy. An even density of foliage should be retained throughout a well-spaced and balanced structure that could in future provide the framework for a crown reduction.
